Bird Sanctuary In Siem Reap

You have come to Siem Reap to see the grandeur of the temples of Angkor but after spending a few days roving around the ruins, we know you may be looking out for something else to do. Many visiting tourists do not realize the abundance of nature Cambodia has to offer. In fact, it is considered as one of the best spots in Asia to delve deeper into wildlife adventures. The Boeung Peariang Bird Sanctuary in Siem Reap, Cambodia, provides a unique opportunity for nature lovers and birdwatchers to explore a habitat rich with approximately 175 species of rare birds, fostering conservation efforts initiated by the local community. This sanctuary, a former hunting ground, has transformed into a vital reserve that underscores the importance of wildlife preservation while offering visitors immersive eco-tourism experiences. Supported by the Asian Development Bank and local environmental agencies, the sanctuary reflects a successful collaboration between community awareness and sustainable tourism practices. Boeung Peariang Bird Sanctuary offers access to over 175 species of birds, including rare waterbirds, in a naturally preserved environment. The sanctuary transitioned from a hunting site to a protected area due to local initiatives aimed at wildlife conservation. The location is approximately 30 minutes from Siem Reap and features diverse ecosystems, including freshwater swamp forests. Local community members are educated and participate as guides and rangers, promoting conservation and eco-tourism. The ideal visiting months for experiencing migratory birds are from February to May, particularly. Visitors can engage in guided boat tours and cultural experiences within the Chreav Village during their visit to the sanctuary.
